El dia que tantos anos espere: El maestro Schenker, el heroe de la Flying V, por fin frente a mis ojos. No es facil para mi escribir u opinar objetivamente sobre un guitarrista que, con su musica y su amplia trayectoria, me apasiona de sobremanera; Pero tengo que hacerlo. En esta gira en especifico, el jefe teuton se enfoco en lo mismo que el album que presento el ano pasado: My Years With UFO, o sus anos con la banda inglesa UFO; los mejores tracks, sus favoritos, o los que lograron destacar y volverse clasicos de la legendaria banda de Phil Mogg.

The day I had waited for so many years: Master Schenker, the hero of the Flying V, finally before my eyes. It isn't easy for me to write or speak objectively about a guitarist whose music and long career have always fascinated me - but I'll try. In this particular tour, the Teutonic chief focused on what last year's album was about: My Years With UFO - his years with the English band UFO; the best tracks, his favorites, or those that became true classics of Phil Mogg's legendary group.

Tras dos horas en un imprevisto embotellamiento de trafico, logre llegar al Marquee Theater de Tempe, Arizona, lamentando haberme perdido a los potentes Armored Saint, que aperturaron el evento, y seguro dieron una gran presentacion, como ya los he visto anteriormente me mantuve conforme, pues mientras estuve atascado en el freeway, pense en la posibilidad de no poder llegar al show y regresar a casa derrotado.

After two unexpected hours stuck in traffic, I finally made it to the Marquee Theatre in Tempe, Arizona, regretting that I had missed the powerful Armored Saint, who opened the event and surely gave a great performance. Having seen them before, I accepted my fate - while sitting on the freeway, I could only think how awful it would be if I couldn't make it and had to return home defeated.

A las 9:20 de la noche, el aleman y su banda tomaron el stage con "Natural Thing" y todo se transformo en magia. El imperante sonido de la Flying V me impacto de manera veloz y el teatro entero celebraba ya la presencia del legendario guitarrista. El publico, me llamo la atencion, compuesto en un 80% de personas que, muy posiblemente, vivieron las etapas de UFO en los setenta, por lo que, contrario a lo que es habitual en este recinto, las secciones estaban compuestas de sillas, por si alguien se sintiera cansado pudiera relajarse y no pasarse las horas de pie.

At 9:20 p.m., the German and his band took the stage with "Natural Thing," and everything turned to magic. The commanding sound of the Flying V hit me instantly, and the entire theatre erupted in celebration. The audience, mostly - about 80 percent ? people who probably lived through UFO's seventies era, was interestingly seated this time, unlike most shows here, with chairs so anyone tired could relax rather than stand for hours.

La agrupacion, que habitualmente cambia de vocalistas con frecuencia, venia con Roberto Dimitri Liapakis al frente, pues por algun motivo Erik Gronwall, quien participo en la gira europea, no se agrego a esta parte del tour, pero Dimitri derrocho energia, talento y mucha garganta. En la segunda guitarra y teclado, el gran Steve Mann, que al igual que Bodo Schopf, baterista, ha formado parte de MSG y otros trabajos de Michael Schenker desde decadas pasadas; en el bajo y tambien de amplia trayectoria, el muy consistente Barend Courbois.

The lineup, which often changes vocalists, featured Roberto Dimitri Liapakis this time, since Erik Gronwall, who sang on the European tour, didn't join this leg. Dimitri was full of energy, talent, and power. On second guitar and keyboards was the great Steve Mann, who - along with drummer Bodo Schopf - has been part of MSG and other Schenker projects for decades. On bass, the solid veteran Barend Courbois anchored the sound perfectly.

Schenker, ya con 70 anos cumplidos, se encuentra en la plataforma de un gran momento; carismatico, energetico y con una naturalidad nata para dominar el escenario y encantar a los presentes como lo habria hecho en cada una de las 29 fechas que conformaron esta gira estadounidense por cinco semanas, donde no hubo necesidad de cancelar ningun show, de los cuales mas de la mitad se convirtieron en sold out. Y es que, la cancelacion, es algo que todos los paranoicos tememos cuando nos compramos el boleto para ver a alguno de nuestros idolos.

Now 70, Schenker is at a great point in his life - charismatic, energetic, and completely natural in commanding the stage and charming the crowd, just as he must have done at each of the 29 U.S. dates on this five-week tour. Not a single show was cancelled, and over half sold out. Cancellations are something every paranoid fan dreads when buying a ticket to see one of their idols.

En lo personal, repito, espere este momento por anos y anos, y solo trataba de canalizar la emocion y no estar tomando demasiadas fotos o video para poder disfrutar el hecho de estar frente a Schenker en carne y hueso, pero no pude contra el impetu de guardar para la posteridad buenas imagenes del espectaculo. Cada rasgueo, arreglo, solo, movimiento y desplazamiento de Schenker sobre el entarimado se convertia en un privilegio que por fin el destino me estaba otorgando, asi que trate, lo mas posible, de mantener mi telefono en calma, tambien por respeto a quienes estaban observando detras de mi; muy pocas personas tenian arriba el movil en comparacion con otros eventos en los que la mayor parte del publico se dedica a transmitir en vivo y grabar el concierto. Es algo generacional posiblemente.

Personally, I'd waited for this moment for years and years. I tried to contain my excitement and not take too many photos or videos - to just enjoy the fact of being in front of Schenker in the flesh - but I couldn't resist capturing some good images for posterity. Every chord, arrangement, solo, movement, and step of Schenker on stage was a privilege that fate was finally granting me. I also tried to keep my phone down out of respect for those behind me; very few people were filming, unlike other shows where most of the audience streams or records constantly. Maybe it's a generational thing.

'Doctor, Doctor', 'Lights Out', 'Love to Love' - temas enormes dentro de una exhibicion por demas placentera. Schenker agradecia los aplausos y realizaba reverencias al publico como el acostumbra. 'Rock Bottom' fue el climax, con un solo de casi siete minutos que en mi humilde opinion, es uno de los mejores que he escuchado en mi vida - la diferencia es que esta vez ya no lo estaba oyendo en un disco ni viendolo en YouTube. Con 'Too Hot to Handle' se despidio el hombre nacido en Sarstedt, Alemania y que en algun momento se avecindo en Puerto Penasco, Sonora, dejando tras sus pasos el impacto de una noche imposible de olvidar para los que amamos el fino sonido de su guitarra. Una noche indeleble. ??

'Doctor Doctor,' 'Lights Out,' 'Love to Love' - huge songs in a truly delightful performance. Schenker thanked the audience and bowed repeatedly, as he always does. 'Rock Bottom' was the climax, featuring a seven-minute solo that, in my humble opinion, is one of the best I've ever heard - but this time, I wasn't listening on a record or watching on YouTube. He closed with 'Too Hot to Handle.' The man born in Sarstedt, Germany, once a resident of Puerto Penasco, Sonora, left behind the lasting impact of an unforgettable night for all who love the refined sound of his guitar. An indelible night. 🤘
