The God Speaks

The Guitar World July '98 Edition

This article is titled "Shred Barons" which is about Michael and Uli Jon Roth, and the G3 tour. It seems that this interview was done before Michael split with UFO, because he talks about how he's really committed to UFO. Here's what Michael Schenker had to say.......

"I almost refused to do the G3 tour because UFO is now my main priority, however, there was a gap in our touring schedule, and the band and my manager encouraged me to do it. I am committed to UFO because i want to know how much further the band can go. The record after Strangers in the Night could have been the biggest UFO record ever, but i quit the band, UFO stopped right in the middle of its progress. After all these years, i felt that i had gone through enough experiments, and now i want to see what more can come out of the band. I like that mystery".

In the dressing room after the MSG/G3 05/21/98 gig at Cardiff International Arena

On the evening of May 21, 1998 (after the Cardiff gig), Alan Walsh was with Michael in his dressing room. Alan started a conversation regarding 'Walk on Water' and 'Written in the Sand'. Alan stated that WoW was much darker lyrically than WitS, thus (for Alan) WitS was a much happier and more optimistic album than WoW.

Michael said: "Walk on Water is a great album and I'm really proud of it. Lyrically it is a fine album, because Phil really bared his soul on that record."

Michael also stated that he was really proud of Phil because he (Phil) "bared his soul". Regarding the lyrics to WitS, Michael said (jokingly, whilst smiling) "Leif's Swedish, so he's happy, what do you expect?"

Michael commented: "The music I play with MSG is far more complex than anything I do with UFO. UFO are a straight ahead Rock 'n' Roll band, whereas MSG is more musically challenging (for me)."
